An 1840 Acrostic Silk Sampler Dedicated To Hugh Bourne (1772–1852), Worked By Eliza White (1809 - 1883)

Shipping to United States: $142.30

An Important 19th Century Acrostic Silk Sampler on linen ground dedicated To Hugh Bourne (1772–1852 British), dated 1840. An alphabetical acrostic sampler hymn by E. Foizey worked By Eliza (Leigh) White (1809 - 1883 British), wife of Reverend William White (1794 - 1875 British) a Methodist missionary who was sent in New Zealand in 1822. Eliza White founded a school for girls and the Auckland Ladies' Christian Association, which became the YWCA. She died in 1883 in Auckland, North Island, New Zealand. This sampler is a hymnal acrostic poem bearing the name of Hugh Bourne. An acrostic hymnal/poem or 'abecedarius is a special type of acrostic in which the first letter of every word, or verse follows the order of the letters in the alphabet. These types of acrostics occur in the first four of the five chapters that make up the Book of Lamentations. Acrostics are common in medieval literature, where they usually serve to highlight the name of the poet or patron or to make a prayer to a saint. Examples of famous acrostic was made in Greek for the acclamation Jesus Christ, Son Of God, Saviour and an acrostic poem written in English by the poet Edgar Allan Poe is entitled simply "An Acrostic".

This rectangular, long and tall sampler with its solidly worked white background is truly a fascinating piece of an important needlework sample. Dedicated to Hugh Bourne, one of the founders of Primitive Methodism, the largest offshoot of Wesleyan Methodism and, in the mid nineteenth century an influential Protestant Christian movement in its own right. In the early decades of the 19th century there was a growing body of opinion among the Wesleyans that their connexion was moving in directions which were a distortion of, not to say a betrayal of, what John Wesley had brought to birth in the 18th century. Eventually Hugh Bourne became the catalyst for a breakaway, to form the Primitive Methodists. Probably 'primitive' was used to clarify their self-understanding that they were the true guardians of the original form of Methodism. By the end of the 19th century these two streams of Methodism realised they had more in common than they might have supposed which led to their being the two principal partners in the union to form the present-day Methodist Church in 1932.

Inscribed In silk On Linen:

Hark Hugh Bourne Smith to what I have To say,
Urg'd on by hope thy Parents jointly pray-
Grace may descend to turn thy youthful mind.
Heav'n ward to seek the saviour of mankind.
Blest with such parents may thou be ever be.
Obedient to them, and from folly flee.
Uplift thy eyes, thy heart, thy all, to heaven,
Regard the name which to thyself is given:
Nor from God's ways, thy footsteps, ever turn,
Engage, proceed, to adore the name Hugh Bourne
Should heavn defend thee give thee length of days,
May God inspire thee, lead thee in his ways,
Instruct thee fully, make thee "apt to teach"
To labour truly-his own word to preach.
Heavns hallowd fire, descend thy heart overflowed
While but a Child-Yet in his Church below,
On thee may rest the unction from above,
On thee that hand which teaches " God is love"
Taught mayst thou be, while of a tender age,
Timothy like, to know the sacred page,
On God's word study,learnings as a prize,
Nor stop till made unto salvation wise.
Born in a world, where satan surely reigns,
And young and old, are captive led in chains,
Shall these immortals bought with Jesus blood,
Sink down to hell or shall they reign with God?
Each pulse of thine, that beats, hope reply,
Tremendious thought ''what tens of millions die"
To rescue these, all things here count dross,
Work, pray, and preach to win them to the cross,
Infinite spirit changeless God of truth,
Let angels watch, and guard this hopeful youth,
Teach him thy counsels, wash him thy blood,
Seal sanctify him fill his soul with God!
His mind let error, never once molest,
In him for ever, let thy spirit rest,
Redeemed, renewed, his mind and steps so turn,
Each work perform'd may grace the name Hugh Bourne.
